Steering Wheel Tilt - Failed

Got out of the car this evening and the steering wheel started to tilt up (as normal) then stopped. I can hear what sounds like the relay behind the clock area (center console area) when I try to manually adjust the tilt but does not move. Will telescope in retract - just not tilt. Seat will move fore and aft. I checked the settings on the display for auto when removing the key etc as well as manually tried to tilt - still nothing.

For years I have been taking the FX in for squeeky tilt and they just regrease it and say it's fine! i think the unit just gave up completely now. Hmmmm could these issues be related?

Anyone have any thoughts?

2005 FX35

Thanks
Julian

After 4 years, this unnecessary feature took its toll on the mechanism?

Never really understood why people use the exit features of the steering wheel and seats. Excessive use of moving parts = failure.
After having the grinding seat tracks on my driver's seat replaced under warranty at 2 years old, I turned off that feature. I'd rather have a power seat that works than wear out the tracks again.

Julian try this- while holding up or down on the tilt button (the direction it wont go), smack the steering wheel. It may start working again. Mine was doing that. Seems like bad contacts in the motor. It has since gone away though.

Then whats the purpose of even having them? do we not drive the vehicle more because the engine is gonna break sooner? If you like the feature use it. Sure, they shouldnt fail as early as they sometimes do. But thats just part of owning an Infiniti :?.

Yeah a ghetto Fonzie fix. I had to do it once in a while. But recently its been good.

Hmm...sounds like when the FX's mirrors stop working and you think the motor is dead. More often than not, just holding down the switch for 10-15 seconds will cause the mirrors to move as they should.

And you guys took my comment a little too far. Besides adding to the wear of the already weak power components, do the auto retract features really make it easier to get in/out? I think it makes it more difficult, not as natural as the standard seating position. I don't know, other than just not seeing the point of these features.

I say the entry exit features are well worth it. Especially in the winter when you have all those coats and such on. Gives you more room to get in and out.

When you have a beer gut, every extra inch is nice :D.

And especially for the COOL FACTOR... I like it when someone sits in my FX for the first time and they're like... did your steering wheel and seat just move? And I'm like, yeah... my FX is hugging me :)

Back from the dead....

Does anyone know if a DIY fix has been discovered for this issue? My steering wheel started doing this a few months ago. It would get stuck in either the most up position or the most down position and to release it I would have to smack the wheel in the same direction that I wanted it to move while holding the button at the same time.

I used to have the squeaking issue also when going up and down. At first I tried some silicone spray and that did nothing. Afterwards I applied some of that black grease (whatever it's called) to the threading behind the wheel and that did the trick. Could the wheel getting stuck possibly be a lubricating issue or more likely a motor issue? Thanks in advance.

Its probably a motor issue. I havent looked at mine yet. Was maybe gonna take the motor and/or limit switch and hit them with electrical contact cleaner.
