I did what the manual said...cleared the memory...held the transmitter button and the homelink button until the light blinked slow then fast..then I released both buttons and expected it to work...what is going wrong here? Why doesn't it work? Any tips?

Read the instruction again. Most garage openers now uses rolling codes for security purposes. Which means you'll need the extra step of pushing the learn button on your garage opener itself and then press the homelink button again until the garage door moves.
