Has anyone compared the NAV coverage of the Infiniti FX vs. the Lexus RX330? There sure are a lot of complaints about the FX system. Thanks. Goofy

I think Acura/Honda has the best. The touch screen is awesome and so is the voice command. The joystick thing is a major PITA and should have atleast incorporated the voice command like the Q and the M for the FX.

The Nissan/Infiniti is *NOT* one of the best.

Consider this. The Lexus and Honda navs have nearly 100 % residential address and turn by turn coverage. The Zenrin system only has about 5% residental coverage with didital overaly maps for the rest.

Even my ancient Street Atlas nav software has residential coverage for most of the US.

Why does Zenrin have almost no residential coverage? Because Zenrin USA was just formed in 2000 and they are creating their own data by sending employees out with GPS to plot out the streets and house numbers. Of course this data has been availabe for year. Toyota/Lexus and Honda/Acura have all of the data. Why? Because they purchased the data from vendors that have made a business of keeping this data up to date for decades.

Zenrin is trying to save money by creating the data themselves.

What does this mean? Well, I bought the FX fo my wife who's a social worker. She will need to go from residential address to address in the city we live in. We live in a major city, but not major enough for Zenrin to have produced data yet. This basically makes the nav in the Infiniti useless to us. If I'd known about it before buying this car, I would have passed and purchased an RX330 instead. Yea I know it's nothing like the FX, but what else could I have done. This feature was really crucial to her and now we can't use it.

I'll be consulting with a laywer soon to see if I have any case. I was told by various dealers that Zenrin had complete coverage and I assumed it would be as good as any other major player, but apparantly it's not even close.

How can I tell which version I have? I guess pull the DVD maybe, I have not even looked.

I just bought my FX last week, but it is a 2003, so it may be old.

My luck.

I can't possibly see how you do- after all, I don't see where your Nav insists you have 100% turn-to-turn coverage.

why buy the 6.2 now, why not wait for the next version.
are you experincing problems finding locations .
i guess if it is a livelyhood issue such as making sales calls
then it is worth investing in it now.

Oh, that's simple. I have brochures and literature that imply comprehensive coverage. I have names of representatives from dealers who told me that the coverage was better than lexus.

The point being that the system used by Infiniti is doesn't work where I live or to places I travel and I was told it would.

Was I stupid for not trying out random residential addresses outside of metropolitan areas? You bet. My mistake, but it was misrepresented to me.

Has anyone confirmed if it is a dual layer DVD or not?

If it's a dual layer DVD, you would have to back it up to 2 DVD-Rs, and I don't think the NAVI unit would be able to deal with that

I believe it IS dual layer. I remember an FA thread where they were trying to figure out a hack for the nag screen and someone looked into the code and such.

I have 6.1 and it's gotten me everywhere I've needed to go here in Houston and back and forth and around in SoCal and Florida. It even led me right to my Grandparents door in a trailer park in Nokomis, FL. It isn't perfect and has given me a few wrong directions in places, but overall I'm happy with it. I think I'll wait on the update for an even more complete version than 6.2.

At least it is good to see that 6.2 is installed in new vehicles. Just picked up my 45 this weekend and was surprised to see that it could find my street since it was built in 2001 and took a long time to show up on things like mapquest.
