I'm wishing I had navigation but I'm not bummed that I skipped the $4,000 OEM package. I found this product the other day that looks interesting (touch screen nav., dvd player, g-tech type performance measuring, back up camera view, etc.)...

http://www.avic-n1.com/

It looks like it should be able to pop into the clock location. It may require the permanent removal of the cassette player door cover. Anybody thought about or used this product yet? It looks like my costs on it would be around $1,500 for the main unit, $200 for the back up camera and $500 in labor for a custom install.

I have installed a few at my shop and I must say they are pretty nice. Previous generation Pioneer stuff was crap, and a pain to install with 10 different cables and such. It has a nice interface to it.

I still prefer the stock nav over the avic-n1...oem is much cleaner and best thing is it is cover warranty.....i would only go aftermarket if the oem nav is garbage (e.g. mb, bmw, porsche, etc...)

I would like to know if its possible to change screens, I dont need nav since it would not do me too much but just to have the reverse camera and dvd would be nice.

A friend of mine has that Pioneer unit. It is an amazing piece of electronics, a jack of all trades.. touchscreen nav w/ voice, mp3, dvd capabilities.... It's got pretty much everything you'd want AND more in a headunit... including a built in Gtech type of performance display w/ killer graphics.

I was thinking about putting one in the clock location myself, so if anyone has performed this operation please give some insight. But instead of N1 mine is the X1 (overseas model) and I would just like to know the does and don'ts of the install in the clock location.

That's where I installed my single-DIN MP3 player. It requires quite a bit of plastic surgery and you have to move 2 modules out of the way, but it is do-able... just take your time and cover the alum trim panels with masking tape BEFORE you start taking everything apart so they don't get all scratched up - especially on the ends and corners.

Good luck.

My problem with the clock panel location is if there's enough clearance in front of the cassette cover for a viewable angle for the pop out screen. :?:

Great advice about masking tape, glad you said that so I can telll the installer to cover everything up. Also you mentioned moving two modulales? Move them out of the way, or remove them period? I have the tech package with the Nav, but I'm overseas so it does not work over here. So is it possible to hook the aftermarket Nav unit up so IT will work properly and the other stuff in the car works properly also? I read on this thread something about hooking the aftermarket NAV to the Sat output. I have Sat radio but that does not work overseas either! So sad!

Yeah, that aluminum scratches real easy as I found out. I think you can scratch it just by looking at it funny.

The two modules need to be moved. One is for the rear view camera, not sure about the other. There's some room under their existing location, but you may need to trim the metal mounting tabs off the one in the metal-enclosed module to make it easier. There's enough length on the wire to move them without having to extend.

For the audio hook up, you can use the PAC AAI-NIS to feed the line level audio into the stock head unit, but you'll have to unplug the SAT receiver cable from back of the head unit, which should be no problem since you can't use the SAT anyway.

When you're done, you won't lose any functionality you currently have. You should also install one of Generator's No-Nag's while you're in there too to automatically bypass the Navigation startup warning message.

Good luck.

Ok I will do that, but the Nav does not work over here anyway! Sucks to have all this stuff and still have to buy aftermarket! I have to say that this is about the best forum that I have yet to visit. I have a 1997 Supra TT and I belong to a few of their sites and I don't half the info that I get from this site! Keep up the good work guys!

Trying not to let this die, so here goes! Has anyone installed the N1 in the stock clock location yet? Or for that matter any Nav with pop out screen in the clock location? Just want to see how it looks as far as visability in that location.

The AVIC N2 will be released soon. I suggest that anyone interested in the N1 and can afford to pay a bit more for the N2 to wait. It should have improved features that will be missed if you get the N1. I think there's a press release on the pioneer website.
