I'm pretty irritated about now. Got popped about 2 months ago doing 62mph in 45mph construction zone with workers present (Fines double in work zone if workers are present, it was 5:20 PM and the workers present was debatable) . Anyway my court date was yesterday. In Texas you are not allowed to use defensive driving, to getout of construction zone ticket. I was not allowed to use deferred adjudication either. As the judge asked me if I had ever done it before? Like an idiot I told the truth (you know the "raise your right hand and repeat after me" routine) and told him I had, but that it ended several months ago. He gave me some song-and-dance about how I can only dodge 1 ticket per year and I must take the ticket and pay fine! We discussed it a bit and he held his ground, to the tune of $392$ which he reduced to $208$ . I want a detector that works. Don't want the valentine thing though. I've narrowed it down to the RX65 or 8500 X50. Anybody have either or some other suggestions? Also where to buy? I want a new one, not used.

Sorry to hear about that Dave. In the meantime, you can drive as fast as you want tonite at the track! :)

I have an 8500 X50 if you want to take a look at it. It works great for me.

Ouch. So what do you have against the V1? Still the best in my book (kinda pricey, though).

I went to radar detectors.com and looked at reviews and it appears that other units are surpassing the valentine unit in tests and technology. Plus for $325 or so- I'm OK w/that.

Not sure about what detectors.com says but the V1 wins hands down in my book. There really is no other choice IMHO.

There's just more to it than just overall detection. Yes, that is the most important thing to look at but at this price level, they all are very close. From there is where the V1 stands leaps and bounds above the rest. Knowing HOW many contacts there are out there and exactly WHERE that source is coming from is just invaluable. I use those features sooo many times with it comes to altering my driving at that point.

Can the Bell maybe detect a signal a bit better? Maybe but if you don't know where that signal is you only know half the battle so to speak. Just hearing a very acurrate "beep" just doesn't do it anymore and that is why I consider the V1 second to none.

re

I got 2 V1's
one in the FX 45 and one in a Audi S4 and they work
plus I have a lidatek radar jammer in the S4 and that does well to.
The V1 wins hands down for me and I have had every escort/passport made and allthough they do work , not as good as a V1
IMO and I have had radar detectors since they 1st came out and still have my original escort LOL

Another vote for the Passport 8500/X50; I have the Red display in my FX and the Blue in my Z06. I'm very pleased with this unit (I've used various models of Passport/Escorts over the years so I'm kind of biased!); very minimal false alarms compared to other models that I've used in the past (again, Passport/Escort varieties).

Bought my units new from an eBay vendor ($239.95 Red and $269.95 Blue) and both are functioning flawlessly thus far...<knocks on wood>

I have 2 V1's, one for my leaky FX, and one for our RX300, then I purchased 2 more for 2 friends...

the best, you will wonder how you would ever have lived without the arrows... its simply the best :)

I have had my Passport 8500 X50 for a few months now and love it. I wouldn't say it's drastically improved from the old 8500, but it is more sensitive to certain types of signals, particularly laser. The only thing the V1 offers over the Passport X50 are directional arrows. I personally am very satisfied and don't see myself buying a V1 any time soon.

On a side note, I now have my old 8500 in my significant others' car and still find it to be a great detector after nearly 4 years and 65k+ miles of use.

I understand the most tangible benifit of using a detector has to do with its pig alert function when it comes to speed traps. Out on a highway it's a different ballgame though. If you're zigging and zagging @ 80MPH while officer Bob's rolling along in an unmarked Dodge Intrepid behind those 18-wheelers you've just managed to get away from, then as soon as he hit you with his instant-on - your ass would be grass. At that point you may have had a NASA custom-engineered detector for all he cares.
The reason I didn't buy V1 was several fold:
It's been out since the time of Moses.
I fail to get excited over this whole arrow business. As though depending on the direction of the threat I may take my time before hitting the brakes.
I hate cords so a neat integration would've cost me time and even more money over its already optimistic asking price.
Mr. Valentine seems to constantly bash his competition. To me that's a sign of penile inadequacy, so to speak. Ever see Mercedes slam their competitors ? Exactly. Because they're a Mercedes frigging Benz.
Enter Escort Solo S2. Dealer outta the door price $296. No cords, no hassles if you wanna take it from car-2-car. And in the course of the 1st 30 days it saved from 3 speed traps. One pig was hiding behind a bridge foundation on I-95 N during evening rush hour, the other 2 near Newton and Brookline golf clubs @ 11 a.m. and 10:30 p.m respectively. Not exactly the kind of spots you'd ever guess might be used for speed traps.
