So is there any way to enable any IM service, say, at work, behind a firewall that blocks typical IM services?

If you company uses a proxy, AOL, Yahoo and I think MSN can use those settings, they tunnel over port 80 so it looks like regular web traffic.

Problem is that I can't even access any of those sites to set it up to begin with. I found this: http://messenger.softros.com/ and got it loaded ok, but have to try it out on another computer on the network to see if it's actually going to work. I just hope it's secure.

You could try http://webmessenger.msn.com/ although that site might be blocked too...maybe you could proxify to it?

Oh, should have mentioned: this is for use internally between employees (but not exactly work related...).

That softros app looks like the right thing. There should be lots of LAN chat apps - ICQ etc. A lot depends upon how your firewalls are configured, I'm no expert, but they may trust internal traffic (only filtering internet traffic).

If you are only chatting internally you could use NetMeeting and do a point-to-point call.
