Hi, I just bought a 07 FX35 and I have the common peeling and deterioration of the film on the window trim. I tried to peel some of it off with a heat gun. Only the top part of the film comes off easy, but the bottom is still tacky. I don’t want to hit it with heat for too long because I’m afraid to burn or melt the rubber on the top and bottom on the window trim.

Any advise on removing the film, maybe a type of sandpaper, if so, what grit?

I plan on Plasti Dipping them also, due to the fact I’ve had problems with adhesion promoter, primer, and paint in the past with other vehicles.

I have read in past postings that this is just sticky trim stuck to the same brightwork on the lower level FXs. Mine is beginning to peel also but I've ignored it. I suspect you could peel the top off and us a high quality plastic tape [3M] that doesn't have shrinkage issues and that may work, but you would still have the issue of the two trims not matching. I've also considered stripping it all off and painting it with semi-gloss. Good luck and please let us know your results.

I’ve talked to a few guys in collision repair today. They said to sand them with 150 grit, and if I were to paint them, get all the way to 600 grit wet sand. Plasti dip covers 150 grit from a video I’ve watched, with no problem so that’s what I will be doing in a few days. 150 grit sanding, Plasti Dip Black, Glossifier for the clear coat look.
