I am confused...

Edmunds' lease calculator just says monthly payments * 5% (MD).
But, dealer says 5% on the whole cost/sale price of the car.

Which one is right?

Also, if it were the whole price * tax rate, should I do it as a down, or roll it into payments?

I am hoping to pick one up tomm, so please help me out here!

I haven't leased for some time, but in California, it was sales tax on the monthly payment. My payment changed whenever the tax rate changed, but did not pay it all up front. Hope that helps.

I think this depends on the state. NJ is tax on entire cost of car.

Same thing in Illinois.

Yes, it depends on where you live. Several states charge sales tax on full value of the vehicle. IL is one of them.
