We purchased an '04 FX35 in April, and about 2 months ago my wife, who is extremely observant, noticed a 1.5x7mm white area tucked away at the bottom corner of the driver's side REAR windshield (where the red body meets the glass). She thought it might, at first, be wax, but since we have not waxed the vehicle yet, it couldn't have been.

Upon closer inspection, she discovered it could be picked away at the edges.....took it to dealership...."South East Regional Infiniti paint specialist" will have to access.......one week at the dealership........SERIP specialist says "it's wax, have service guy remove, tell lady to come pickup her FX"..........service guy tries to remove, and ends up chipping away a large area of paint

..........SERIP specialist is called back to reaccess.........****, it was paint FLAKING off...........wife demands a brand NEW 'Factory Painted' lift gate.........Infiniti complies with request (I've painted cars in the past--it WAS a roboticly painted PERFECT, new factory gate).........wife VERY HAPPY.

I MUST SAY THAT I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE WAY THAT INFINITI HANDLED THIS MATTER, AND DID NOT TRY TO TOUCH IT UP OR GET 'BILLY BOB' DOWN THE STREET TO REPAINT THE GATE OF THIS 4 MONTH OLD $40K VEHICLE.

EXCEPT..........two weeks ago I was at a different INFINITI dealership in another state, and they happened to have another semi-RARE LASER RED FX.........I thought to myself.....what if?........So I checked the back REAR corner of the lift gate, and in the EXACT same area, two similar 2x6mm areas of white shown where the paint had chipped away......this FX was an '03 trade-in.

 I wonder if many of you out there have this paint flaking and don't know it yet..........maybe it is just the LADSER RED,.......................but it sure is strange, and then to top it off, when I got home I checked my wifes FX and it's BRAND NEW replaced lift gate ---~1 month old at this time---WAS CHIPPING/FLAKING away as well........*[email protected][email protected]#*

Please take the time to look at yours sometime soon, this might not be a large problem now,( at 2x7mm) while you still have your warranty, but it could become much larger after the warranty is gone.

I'll try to post some pictures soon; if anyone as a Verizon phone with image capability, I can send it too you that way.

Could you be opening the tailgate into your garage door when it is open? My old garage door had structural metal rails on it which would hit the tailgate of my forrester.

hidden area

Nope....this spot lies in a sheltered area at the bottom of the rear windshileld....so that a light from above the rear gate would cast a shadow just under the lip of the rear glass---it is IN this slender long area/crevice created by the lip of the rear windshield above and the painted body rolling out from behind the glass below. The area where the paint seems to be chipping is sheltered by the flaring body panel below and the glass lip above, so that someone would have to use a screwdriver to scrape out paint in this area--it also appears to be the EDGE/beginning of the painted surface, and thus more likely or prone to flaking or chipping if it is not sufficiently adherent to the underlying metal.....another reason why INFINITI probably replaced the entire gate with little fuss --they, as did the service manager, knew that this was a defect, and not likely from some external force.

Sorry I have not posted pics yet, they are on my camera phone, and my wife (out of town) has the digital camera.....will hopefully post this weekend :) Hope the description helps.

I believe that this is perhaps a problem with the LASER RED paint only, but still unsure... :? .... one of the INFINITI service managers stated that INFINITI had replaced multiple rear gates at the CA docks b/c of some sort of problems with the lift gates....not sure what kind of problems, but I believe it had to do with the center LED light bar?....and this is why there were extra FACTORY PAINTED lift gates available, so he said (he was very upfront, knowledgable and helpful)

I have had the same problem with my DG. I started noticing the chips on the passenger side above the front wheel well. At first I chalked it up to rock chips. While washing it Monday I noticed there are definately more chips. I have found a couple chips in the forward portion of the door jamb (protected from potential rock damage) and inside the passenger dorr handle area. Further inspection has show there are 25 little pencil-tip sized areas of flaking paint.
**** car has less than 3k miles on it. :x

I'm telling you guys they're there!!!

The areas in talking about are small and fairly easily overlooked, but I have found them on other FXs....the owners are just oblivious to them now because they are sooo small 2-3mm and usually in recessed areas where the paint begins. I'll try to post pictures.

It is interesting that yours, a Dark Graphite, is chipping, I've only noticed the Laser Red chipping and only the rear gate, as it is painted seperate from the rest of the vehice, per Infiniti.
