if i am looking for posts that a specific user created, how do i go about doing that?
when i type the name of the user in the author section of the search, it list all the posts that the user has made....
so how do i find ONLY the topics they have created/started?

Can't. Just have to do some digging. The other option to what you listed is to click on the profile of the user in question, where there is a link to find all posts by that user, but it isn't limited to threads they started, either.
