I use 91(best we can get in Cali) but using 87 probably won't hurt your car. Higher ocatne becomes more of a necessity when you start running FI.

95/98 octane fuels are common in Europe... I always use 95. In Germany they even provide 100 octane, but that seems a bit pointless with an atmospheric engine.

Do they measure the octane rating in Europe the same as in the US?

In the US the pump octane ratings are (R+M)/2.

Europe measures in Research Octane Number (RON), so 95RON = 91PON (= (R+M)/2).

Table:

RON - MON - (R+M)/2
90 - 83 - 86.6
92 - 85 - 88.5
95 - 87 - 91
96 - 88 - 92
98 - 90 - 94
100 - 91.5 - 95.8
