PROBLEM

at about 1900 miles, i began to notice a mild 'creak' sound coming from somewhere overhead, when the moonroof is closed; shade open OR closed......

CONDITIONS

the 'creak' is enticed to happen when there is some sort of 'flex' or change in angle of the body, ride surface, etc... i mostly would hear it when i slowly back out of my driveway (at the apron) and onto the road....

CAUSES??

after finding NO tsb for this occurance, i investigated the components of the moonroof glass, track, and pop-up deflector, more. I still couldnt find any loose or worn-looking parts, BUT did notice a build-up of wax starting around the rubber-like weatherstrip edges of the moonroof glass....

then i closed the roof, and was able to duplicate the noise..by gently pressing down on the glass, i could get a 'creak' to happen..

FIX??

the ONLY thing i tried on this was to 'lube' the edges of the moonroof, to help it seat/seal without chaffing and subsequently creaking.

I used the product "vinylex", which is made by the makers of the great "lexol"® series of stuff. It comes in a blue spray bottle, and is what i use on all the interior (non leather) surfaces.....

The Vinylex® product doesnt leave a greasy, filmy residue whatsoever, so thas why i use it.....

OUTCOME

S-U-C-C-E-S-S!!

so far, the creaking has totally subsided, and is a thing of the past....

i hope this helps any creaky members out....

post up if you have any input!

moonroof

Scott,

It helps to clean the sunroof frame where a film will build up from continuous contact with the seals. I also use Vinylex and it works great. I still have to do it 1-2months or else the creaking comes back.

After detailing my new 04, I noticed the seal around the moonroof seems to be to "thin" and looks as if it barely closes the gap between the sunroof and frame (mainly in the rear of the sunroof. I've tried to check to make sure it is a good seal by pouring water into the seam and then checking the inside to check for leaks. None that I really noticed. Has anyone else noticed this? Has anyone had any problem with the sunroof leaking?

Another tip.... check to ensure that all screws are tightened properly. My sunroof was doing the same when there was any type of body flex... turned out to be a loose screw on the side of the sunroof track. Tightened and now problem resolved!
