You may have seen this info before, but I just came across it. The FX scored very high across the board with the exception of head/neck and the 5mph bumper test.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated the crashworthiness of the FX in two 40 mph frontal offset crash tests into deformable barriers. In the first test, the driver frontal airbag deployed late, with the result that high forces were recorded on the dummy's head, indicating the likelihood of head injuries.

This led Infiniti to modify the frontal airbag deployment characteristics on models produced after September 10, 2003. Also, Infiniti initiated a service campaign to modify, at its cost, vehicles produced earlier. The Institute tested a second FX with the modified driver airbag, and the airbag inflated much earlier. Ratings of the FX are based on the results of the second test, except structural performance is based on both tests.

OVERALL EVALUATION: GOOD

STRUCTURE/SAFETY CAGE: GOOD In both tests, there was minimal intrusion into the driver footwell area and no rearward movement of the instrument panel.

RESTRAINTS/DUMMY KINEMATICS: GOOD Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head brushed the inflated side curtain airbag and its fabric cover. The dummy continued to rebound into the seat without its head coming close to any stiff structure that could cause injury.

INJURY MEASURES: HEAD ACCEPTABLE Measures taken from the neck, chest, and both legs indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions. However, head acceleration was high when the dummy's head bottomed out the airbag and hit the steering wheel, indicating the possibility of head injury.

ADDITIONAL SAFETY FEATURES:

- Active head restraints: designed to move up and forward to support front occupants' heads in low-speed rear impacts
- Brake pedal assembly: designed to slide away from the driver in certain frontal impacts
- Electronic stability control designed to minimize possibility of sideways skidding (optional)
- Antilock brakes

Also note that the IIHS gives the FX a Best Pick Rating in the Overall Frontal category.

See also the NHTSA tests: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/testing/ncap/Index.cfm

Both Driver and Passenger rate 5 Stars across the board; also both Front and Rear Seats earned 5 Star ratings on side impacts.
