Can anyone identify this?

Hi, longtime lurker first time poster.

Need some help identifying an area of my 08’ FX35 (well wife’s 08’ she had it when I first met her but I take care of her now). Took it to the muffler guy to get loose cat heat shields removed and I noticed a very rusted area by the rear passenger wheel. It was easily crumbling apart as I touched it. There seems to be a sealed box above it.

I know there’s tons of rust and it sucks dealing with Northeast winters and salt. I’m debating getting the undercarriage coated and a new cat back, so I’m trying see if that’s even worth it judging by all the deterioration. Many thanks in advance to anyone that can help!

That is the cover for the evap canister. The canister is part of the EGR system. Above the cover you will find the canister and the EVAP solenoid.

Thank you! Much appreciated!
BTW, what do you or anyone else think of this level corrosion?

That is quite a lot of rust but probably pretty normal for your location. I normally would suggest that you take off any easy removable parts and clean and paint them but I am positive that you will just end up breaking a bunch of bolts which will cause you more headaches. If possible, get under the car with a wire brush and go at the rusty areas pretty hard. As far as undercoating, I suggest one of the oil based products rather than the thick rubberized ones.

Typical of salt and not spraying under car as not all car washes do this. Some of the small thin parts are done, other cast thick stuff is good to go. if it's not broken or has an issue don't bother, you can spray wd40 or some other on all the bold and nut studs to make sure there is some hope of penetration for future service when you can get under there. You can also apply some rust inhibitor to some of the parts that converts rust to a primer! Besides that, just enjoy her and do regular maintenance!

From what I can tell from pics is everything that's deteriorating is considered non structural. However there is concern because the purpose of the metal that is rusted is to protect what looks like brake lines and or fuel lines etc. You may want to fabricate new sheet metal to replace it.

Just removed the cover from my 2010 FX50 to get to the evaporator cannister vent valve (code P0455) and mine is the same; southern Ontario and lots of salt. It's meant to protect the plastic canister. Mine will crumble with a good hit from road debris...
