Camshaft Position Sensors... Metal or Plastic?

2648 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  RockyFX45
Howdy, I have a 2004 Infiniti FX35. I am replacing my camshaft position sensors bank 1 and 2. I notice my current sensors are metal at the ends, and most of the replacements I've found are plastic. Trying to understand the differences between these, because the metal ones are significantly more expensive and I can only find them OEM.

OEM:
23731-AL61D

Left shows what I pulled out of Bank 1 (OEM). Right shows the plastic alternative.

I don't want to make a mistake in installing one that wouldn't work or would cause more problems, so any recommendations is appreciated.

It really shouldn't matter as long as it is the correct part number (or equivalent). I suspect that the metal is aluminium.

My engine wouldn't turn over with the plastic one, but it was used so could have been bad. Ended up just unplugging and replugging all my aluminum ones and reset the ECU after an oil change and my P0021 code went away. Thanks for the input!
The aftermarket ones from part store are garbage they are known to be faulty especially in First gen fx 35 a terrible pain endured in the infiniti community go with dealer if its not too pricey or higher end one from parts start and make sure the oem matches.
OEM $15-$30

Genuine Nissan- $82-$150

Big Difference. I imagine today's OEM Sensor are much better then the OEM's of 15 or even 10 years ago?

Also how Do you tell a fake form original? Is it the Metal Part? because part numbers change not sure if original will even come metal and not plastic in today's day and time?
