I took out the Bose sub from the spare wheel console and opened it up. A tiny bar soap size amp is driving two scrawny 6" speakers.

I'm thinking of replacing the cheap speaks witha 6" woofer like JL Audio. and using a real amp. What do you guys think? Any suggestions? I still can't find the bose amp for the rest of the speakers.

By the way, driving around without the Bose sub, neither my wife(who didn't know about the sub removal) or I could hear a difference.

The guy who put the 10" - He put it on top of his spare. It was a free air sub (Kicker?) and bolted to the cargo floor. I was thinking of doing that but free air subs do not work all that well IMO. I am seriously considering to get rid of the spare and working a custom box in there for a small sealed box. Many 10s and even 12s only need a 1 cubic ft sealed enclosure to work extremely efficiently.

Free air won't work imo. It might, in a car with a well sealed trunk.

I have been thinking about building an enclosure for the spare tire space also if the bose sub upgrade doesn't work.

In the mean time here is the equipment list.

2 x DLS UR6
1 x DLS UR2
1 x DLS UP1C
1 x Arc Audio XXK 1500D
1 x Arc Audio XXK 5150
1 x Arc Audio PEQ-7
3 x ARC 12D4
1 x ARC DIGI CAP
1 x Extra Battery

I will be removing the spare tire and creating a fiber glass box / amp rack in that area to still mazimize space in the truck. Cross your fingers.

The two main suppliers will be http://www.arcaudio.com and http://www.dls.se. The install company will be http://www.20hzaudio.com. I will keep updating as pics come available.

I have attached a pic of a buddy's car .. 2002 Ford Explorer.

for the cars following behind
If it was me, I wouldn't be following for long. I love my music (rock & roll mostly, but classical piano too since I've been learning to play for about a year), but I don't understand this bigger is better craze in car stereos. It's funny how most home stereo speakers have shrunk in size (mostly due to the addition of sub woofers) since I got my first quadrophonic system back in the 70s, while car systems keep growing.

Thanks ujmot for the instructions.

WOW! those are some crazy setups!! 4tyson keep us posted on your system. Few years ago, I would have done those things to my FX but now I want to keep it stock looking with a little better sound.

I saw the post of the fxer who put the sub above the spare tire. I was planning on doing this but that would require finding a really low profile sub.

Guess what. I found one. 10" sub too.

Check this one out:

The brand is Phase Linear which is a Danish brand.

http://www.phase-linear.de

They have a US distributer but the price is pretty expensive. I believe about 500-600 maybe more for a 10" sub. The good thing is that they are low profile so they will fit above the spare tire and still allow you to even creat a sealed enclosure above the spare tire while still keeping the spare in the well.

I want to do this as I've done an install with my brother using the spare tire as a semi-sealed enclosure (probably not 100% seal but it kicks pretty well). Just that the price is too high for the sub.

Has anyone heard of this brand before? I think it'd be a pretty good project to do. Perhaps in the future.

I was thinking of cutting a circle above the spare tire, and using bondo or foam to create a mold for the sealed enclosure, it would fit right on top of the spare tire well.

It's important for me to keep my cargo space and make the install look stealthy see.

Anyways just wanted some comments on the idea. I'm always up for working on my interior anyways.

:D
