Clock Light Bulb Replacement 03-05

So my clock light went out! Dealer was charging $135 to replace. This is so ridiculously easy I had to share a quick write up to fix the light for about $5. Some have shown images of this on this forum but here is a little more detailed view with pix.

Re: Clock Light Fix

Merged it and will change title to reflect 03-05. But why didnt you just get the right replacement bulb from an auto parts store?

Re: Clock Light Bulb Replacement 03-05

Couldn't find it anywhere. I tried the usual chain stores. The dealer has the bulb assembly for about $17 each. I didnt want to have to deal with them for it. Besides, $5 is better than $34. I guess if you didnt want the headache of rewiring the bulb you could just get it from the dealer and still be cheaper that $135.
In any case I thought it was easy enough.
Hopes this helps someone out there.

$17 each? Thats crazy. Most auto parts stores have them. Like this: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp ... Clock+Lamp
$5. But I guess if you couldnt find them, you made it work .

Re: Clock Light Bulb Replacement 03-05

Ummm... I dont think that bulb would work. You are right, they have those at all the parts places. Either you get the bulb already mounted in the socket (see the pic above, you can get that from the dealer) or you just replace the bulb which has to be 'wired' into the socket (or housing or whatever the grey thing is called). The wires leaving the bulb have to be long enough to twist in the groves under the 'socket' to make contact with the leads in the clock assembly.

Years later - just gotta say that I really appreciate you posting this.
Ended up eating the $17/bulb, but way cheaper and easier than dropping it off.
Thanks!

INFO: Part number was 24860-3Y101 (those came with the blue/purple cover); I had to remove the yellow cover from my burnt ones to make it match.

Re: Clock Light Bulb Replacement 03-05

I know this is an older post but it may still be relavent. I had both lights go out on my 2003 clock for the third time since I have owned it. I opted for a LED solution (Approximately 50000 hrs to 70% intensity). I pulled the clock and the light sockets out as above. I removed the bulbs from the sockets and bought a two pack of White LEDs from Radio Shack. part number 276-0017 ($2.19) I bought a 5 pack of 470 ohm resistors ($1.19). placed the LED in same as the incandesant bulb wrapped the negative terminal (shorter lead) around the socket as the bulb was. placed a single resistor in series on the positive (longer lead) and wrapped the other end of the resistor around the socket as before. placed yellow cap from old bulb over LED and back in clock. Plugged it in worked as it should. the color temperture on the white was slightly high (guessing 6-7000K because with the yellow cap the light is a bit greenish) Since LEDs are sensative to polarity if they dont light at first unscrew the socket and rotate it 180 degrees and put it back in.

Supplies:
276-0017 two pack of white LED's 7000mcd, color temp unknown, FW current 25 mA, FW voltage 3.3V typ
271-0009 (used two) five pack of 470 ohm 1/8 watt resistors.

solder and solder iron to solder the resistor to the LED

based resistor calculations on 14 volts supply, R=(14-3.3)/.025 R=428 used a 470 ohm 1/8 watt resistor for each

I overrated the resistor because the LED was listed as High Bright and I did not want it to be too bright compared to the other dash lights.

I will go back tomorrow and try a red, yellow and maybe a lower candela white it may be a warmer white to see if I can get a better color match. *Resistor value change may be required*

If you read the above posts, you can get them from the dealership. Someone even posted the part number. If you get them from the dealership, there is no wiring involved.
