Curt Hitch - Infiniti 2004 FX35

Hey all,

I recently just bought a curtis manufacturing hitch for my 2004 Infiniti FX35 and ran into some major problems when doing the install myself. First off, they say the installation should only take 45 mins, nope plan for a whole day if installing this yourself. The question I have goes to anyone who has installed one of these hitches themselves, did people have trouble installing the the 4 bolts in aluminum bumper rail? I could only install the two outside ones because there are pieces of foam in the rail which prevent the two inner bolts from traveling down the inside of the rail and into their respective wholes. If anyone has any insight on this issue please post a response!!!

Thanks,

Jim

Re: Curt Hitch - Infiniti 2004 FX35

Hi, I had the Curt installed at a local truck accessories shop and it took them about 5 hours with all the right equipment so I can appreciate the challenge. Plus I had to go back complaining of a rattle and it turned out to be some control box they taped to the inside hatch panel and it came loose. Sorry I can't help with the problem you are having.

Re: Curt Hitch - Infiniti 2004 FX35

I just installed a Curt hitch bought from J.C.Whitney for $150 USD with free shipping. I am probably the only idiot to put J.C.Whitney parts on a FX-45 but it was the same Curt part number!
Anyway, the bolts that require "fishing" through the rectangular aluminum bumper tube issue...
There are other bolts and obstruction inside that tube, that prevent the large rectangular washer and carriage bolt from being fished through. After hours of trying, and snapping off the fishwire, I retrieved the bolt and washer from the beam with a magnet and threw them away!
I found a regular high grade hex bolt, drilled a small hole though the threaded portion about 1/4" below the head, and inserted a piece of copper ground wire from a piece of Romax in my junk drawer. That allowed me to position the bolt more accurately, but still let it flex enough to manuver past the obstructions in the tube. Once it dropped into the hole, I got the nut started, and yanked out the wire. I jambed a chisel inside the tube to try to hold the bolt head from turning, but one blast of the air tool was all it took to tighten it up!
Also, don't fight those rubber muffler/exhaust hangers...just blast the three hanger mounting bolts off. Much easier! But sure glad they didn't snap off!
My install took 8 hours, but that included time to polish the exhaust tips while they were down!

Re: Curt Hitch - Infiniti 2004 FX35

I recently installed a Curt Mfg hitch on my '06 FX35, your information was very helpful. I ended up taking the rear bumper cover off, it made all of the difference. It took about 3 hours for the cover removal, hitch install, harness install and putting it all back together. I highly recommend removing the cover, it's a quick removal and will have you a lot of headache in trying to work in this confined space. Not to mention, you have to take most of the panels off for the harness. Fishing your harness wires was much easier with the cover off too. Pictures to come.

Re: Curt Hitch - Infiniti 2004 FX35

is it hard to take off the rear bumper cover? I installed the curt hitch and like most i couldn't get the inner bolt in place, i haven't used it to tow anything yet cause i'm not sure how well it will hold with those 2 bolts missing?
when are you going to add pics?

Re: Curt Hitch - Infiniti 2004 FX35

Rather than create a new thread to ask this question, I'll bump this old one.

Would someone with the Curt hitch installed mind snapping a photo? I searched all over and found many pics of OEM, some Hidden Hitch, and no Curt. Lots of folks say the Curt hitch is more visible from the rear, and I'm just wondering HOW visible, and if it's worth the extra $$$ for the OEM version. One dealer quoted me $950 + tax for the hitch, harness, installation. I'm tempted to do it but my inner cheapskate will be so pissed.
