FX45 speaker replacement

I have a 2003 FX45 with the BOSE stereo system. I have gathered the following information but it conflicts with what a couple of people have said.

Front dash left/right - 3.5 inch
Front dash center - 3.5 inch
Front door left/right - 6.5 inch
Rear door left/right - 6.5 inch
Rear pillars left/right - 4 inch
Subwoofer(s) - custom Bose box with dual 6 inch subs
Amp 1 (for all but subs)
Amp 2 (for subs)

QUESTIONS:

1. Is this information accurate? What about the center channel size?
2. What ohm rating are the speakers?
3. How much power (at how many ohms) is the factory amp putting out? I'm asking about both amps.
4. What kind of signal is being sent to the amps from the factory stereo? Will I require replacement amps with high level inputs or will RCA inputs work?
5. Does the factory stereo crossover the preamp signal for each of the speakers already, or is everything full-range until it gets to the amp?

I know this is a lot of information I'm requesting. I apologize if it's been covered elsewhere but I've really looked and looked and can't find any threads with definitive answers. Once this information is acquired, I'll be changing out all my speakers and the two amplifiers (unless the factory 'Amp 1' is fine for aftermarket speakers). I will take many pictures all along the way and create a detailed write up of the work for all my fellow infinitifx members.

Re: FX45 speaker replacement

Many simply change the speakers and get better sound. Speakers are 2 ohm, so try and find the same if you are just gonna replace the speakers. No real measurements on power of the oem amps. The factory radio sends out a LOW level signal, and it is NOT crossed over- it is full range. The amps handle the xover duties. People seem to think they need a Cleansweep or some other kind of interface but its not necessary. Its just a simple 4 channel low level audio.

I'm pretty sure the fronts are all 3.5"... doors are 6.5"... rear pillars were small... I think 2.5" if I remember correctly... and the subs were I think 5.5"... definitely less than 6"... all 3 in the front are the same but cause they're 2 ohm, many have left the OEM center alone or taken it out entirely... replacing it with the same speakers for the front left & right dash made it WAY too center heavy... at least that's what I've read so far... there have already been some suggestions on replacement speakers... do a search for an OLD ironchef thread where he talks about replacing his speakers...

Re: FX45 speaker replacement

Well I'm pissed. I have two sets of 4 inch polk audio coaxial speakers that I wanted to put into this SUV, but come to find out the front speakers are all 3 inch. I'm looking at some of the other install threads to decide if I decide to go all out with the install. I just don't trust some noname 2 ohm speakers, and so far I haven't found any amplifiers that could be a direct replacement for the factory amps. If anyone has any input please feel free to drop a line.

Re: FX45 speaker replacement

did you look at the thread Steve linked above? Good info in that thread that would have helped before you went out and bought those 4s. And there are MANY speaker upgrade threads with other replacements people have used. Search thru the AV forum.

Re: FX45 speaker replacement

Yep. The thread I linked above showed that Boston Acoustics S35 speakers (3-1/2 in, 87mm) were used in the front dash.

Indeed, I will likely purchase said speakers. I'm curious however, if the factory amplifier will have enough power to properly push those speakers to shine. Do you have any input or experience in this? Also, if you believe a replacement amplifier would be helpful, what do you suggest? I'd prefer to avoid rewiring everything if possible. I also intend to retain the factory head unit for the stealth and function. I would not be opposed to replacing it with a head unit from one of the 2005+ cars however. It is my understanding that in doing this, I may enjoy the ability to play MP3 music directly from CDs.

Re: FX45 speaker replacement

If you dont want to rewire things, then stick with the oem amps. Its not a simple swap to put aftermarket amps in. The new speakers will sound much better than stock.

You can't just change to a 2006-2008 head unit. Theres more to it than that. Least of which is trying to retrofit the newer control bezel, which would mean some custom dash modification.

Thank you Johnmax, you are correct in that there is some excellent information in that thread. Actually, I had purchased these speakers several years ago and intended to use them in another car. I hadn't the time to complete the install and ended up selling the car and moving to Boston for work [hence the need for an SUV]. So luckily I didn't just buy them and come to find I can't use them - but on the other side of the coin if I had, I could surely return them and get something else. ARGH now I've got a headache!
