After changing the battery, the radio no longer produces sound. The head unit turns on, will start playing cd's, will change radio stations and display nav. But, there is no sound for any of those functions. Is there a fuse that perhaps blew, or is the head unit or amp a more likely culprit?

Sounds like you blew a fuse. Check the panel in the drivers foot well, fuses 6, 12, 17. Also fuse box under the hood by the battery, fuse 32

I thought it would likely be a fuse also. I just checked all of them again in those 2 boxes, including the ones you mentioned and all are good. Any other ideas?

Are you sure it's just the sound for the radio that doesn't work? It sounds like you touched the battery terminals or installed the cables backwards. Are there any other electronics not working like the windshield wipers, rear defroster, windows, sunroof, etc, etc? There's also a fuse in the engine bay; have you checked that one?

I have checked the fuse in the engine bay, it is intact. I did not reverse to poles but in any case, everything else works. The only item that doesn't work is the radio. Every other electronic works perfectly, including thoses listed in the last reply. My guess is that if there are no other fuses, it must be the radio head unit or the amp. Can anyone help troubleshoot and isolate the problem.

Is changing the battery the only thing you did? For the hell of it did you get a test light or meter and check EVERY fuse in all 3 fuse boxes (1 inside and 2 under hood)?

Aside from that, you will need to get to the amp and start testing for power and turn on signal. You may have fried something unintentionally. For the hell of it you can disconnect the battery for a few minutes and reconnect it to reset everything. Sometimes can help.

There is also a self diagnostic mode that will allow you to test some stuff before you start tearing everything apart. I don't remember specifically what's in the self diagnostic but you can run through the menus and give it a shot. Also do a "reset" which I'd assume would get rid of your presets but what good are presets if you can't hear them?

1. Start Engine (I just turned it to ACC)
2. Turn the audio system OFF
3. While pressing the 4 button, turn the volume either way for 30 or more clicks.

You'll see the self-diagnosis mode and you can run through the menus and see if something might help you. I do remember a master reset as well

On the 04 you have to hold mute and spin the volume. But I dont think thats gonna help in this case. Thats more of a communications menu- the amp system isnt on the data bus.

But it is fun to look in there nonetheless :D

Thank you all for the help so far.

I checked all the fuses for continuity and they were good. I looked at the diagnostic mode, it was interesting but didn't tell me anything useful. Interestingly disconnecting the battery for 20 minutes and reconnecting had some effect.

Once reconnected, initially still no radio or nav sound but, had the center dash speaker making a soft popping sound about once per second while on acc but stopped once the car started. The next time I started the car, suprise there was the nav voice so I turned on the radio and had right side sound but no left. The next time I started the car, I had sound all over. Then this morning, I started the car and no sound again. So I turned it to off then put the ignition at acc, had full sound which remained once I started the car.

I think my car might be possessed now, any other likely scenarios?

My money is on it being possessed ;)

Where do you live? It sounds to me like a loose or corroded ground. Check this out for some pages from the FSM that should help you out a bit:

In Houston, TX so no salt and cars really don't corrode here. Thanks for the wiring daigram, I will check out the grounds in the next day or two.

Yeah, no salt and corrosion but sometimes, over time, the grounds just work their way loose so it's worth a shot checking that out. Since it's intermittent, it definitely sounds like a bad ground (to me)... John may have a different opinion

Mmm sounds like something in the radio or amp may have went bad. Tough to say without being there and tools in hand, but it may be. But yes do check those grounds, and your battery cables. But If the car drives and such, i'm sure the radio is getting the current it needs.
