What LED is everyone using for their DTRL?

I've been through 3 LEDs from Superbright LEDs. They just keep going out on me. I thought LEDs were supposed to last forever.

Does anyone know if it is possible to install one of the Audi DTRL leds?

You're lucky. When I stuck in those 3 leds my fuse blew. Had to replace it myself.

LEDs should last a long time, unless:

1) They get too hot. Most of these LED bulbs likely run the LEDs near/at their maximum limits to maximize brightness since LEDs do not give off as much light as incandescent bulbs. Plus, the LEDs may not get enough cooling in the light housing.

2) They are subjected to too much vibration. I think the light generating component is fairly robust, but all the wires, solder joints, etc. that supply electricity can be prone to break depending on how will the bulb in constructed.

I just bought some off eBay: http://stores.ebay.ca/warden-jp2002.

Don't know how long they will last but they were fairly cheap US$25.40 for a pair. Light seems slightly "blue" compared to the OEM HID-Xenon headlights, but still a better match than the OEM incandescent bulbs.

Yeah, I seem to keep blowing them and can't figure out why. They seem to go out on me when it gets cold outside. Maybe the cold make the components more brittle and more susceptible to breaking from vibration?

I've started looking for LED's that are OEM in other cars dtrl. i.e audi, porsche to see if there is a way to retrofit them into our cars. I haven't come with anything yet (haven't really tried too hard). Just wondered if anyone has any experience or heard if it is possible.

I've replaced one or two in two years. I dont think the weather has anything to do with it. Our car has been through the crappiest of winters in Germany and Colorado. We've also had the car go through some tough summer heat in southern Texas..... I had to purchase more when we got the headlights replaced with the recall thing....cause the dealer was quick to dispose of the old units.....my wife forgot to get the lights out before the swap....

Did you try the ones from autolumination.com? There was an old group buy here a few years ago and many of us got them from there and they are still going strong.

So I bought the 60 led smt wedge bulbs from superlumination and one week later they are flickering after having them on for a while. I think that they must be overheating.

After 4 attempts, I think I'll give up and go back to the incandescents.

I've never tried LEDs for the DTRLs. I have the hyperwhite bulbs from Polarg (like these http://www.racinglab.com/polm2hyp74bu.html ). They give off a blueish/white light, and I've had the same set of bulbs for 4 years now - no problems. You might want to try those out

Thanks for posting this. I might give these a try.

I tried driving today with the bulbs undone from the housing to get some air into the lens space and did not notice any flickering. I think that it might have been the heat build up.

I had this exact set of bulbs twice and what happened was the resistor heated up to the point of melting the base and fried the resistor. After the second set i just gave up.

I'm looking at putting a resistor before the bulb to lower the voltage a bit to get the LEDs from overheating or being borderline over powered.

Does your profile picture represent this led dtrl?

Since November of last year. Looks really nice at dusk. DTRL's really stand out.
And i like the after glow. Once the car is off,the phosphor in the LED's still glows.

Yes it does. It looks blueish on the picture, but the colour is white.
Maybe has a small hint of blueish colour when looking from the side.

OOOOooooo... sounds good... some LED bulbs have died quickly so I've held off for a while but if these have lasted over a winter and through a summer without any problems they probably won't die anytime soon... now I'll hafta check that thread about all the different light bulbs inside the FX too...

I might have some suggestions for the interior lighting. I got that done about the same time using 12 LED smd.

I bought from autolumination.com about 2 years ago, and I drive with my lights on all the time. No issues at all.

The 32 LED was bought by many, but the color is about 8000k. Since I have 6000k bulbs, I got I believe the 18 LED bulb. They are plenty bright, so I don't think you need a lot of LEDs so maybe the 60 LED might be too much.

I took few pictures indoor, but it's almost impossible to get a good picture head on. It's too glary :firestarter: for the camera.
I'll take the car outside and try again.
