I have been asked if I would consider a used FX 50 Low millage instead of a new FX 35, love to get thoughts on this. apart from a walloping power difference what are the plus and minus. New cars have a great 4K factory incentive this month, which you don't get with a used car.

first 2-3 years amount to ~50% depreciation on most vehicles... used you will get more car than new for the same $$$. I'd rather have a one year old loaded 50s than a brand new base fx35 for sure personally... others though would much rather have a brand new car... either way you just gotta compare asking price vs worth, & then decide what it is you'd rather have...

Obviously it depends on what you want. There are threads here ad nauseum comparing the benefits and drawbacks of owning an FX45/50 versus the FX35. In summary 35's are lighter, apparently more fun to drive, are a bit more fuel efficient, and have much more potential for engine mods. 45's and 50's (especially the 50's) just have that real low end grunt and of course with the 50's you've got what, a hundred more HP than a 35?

Never buy new...Buy the 50

no replacement for displacement.
yeah you may not be able to mod a 50 but no everybody does want to. it may be a year or two old but if the prices are in the same ball park your getting more car for you buck

Good luck with your decision

I've never bought new, always preowned. Get the 50 -- you won't be disappointed. Well, you shouldn't be, at least.

I am going to look at both on Monday. By this time next week there will be an FX in my driveway, the question is used 50 or new 35 :D

Go with the 50.

I've owned both the 35 and the 50.
If you get the 35, you'll always think back "what if".

If you get the 50, well, you'll always be happy because it's a 50 and not a 35.

Not to be Mr. Obvious here, but the car is only new while you're thinking about buying it.
Once you pick it up and drive it off the lot, the 35 will be the same "condition" as the 50, used.

Only thing would be to make sure you check the 50 over carefully to make sure it is in a condition that you are satisfied with.

the 35 is "more fun to drive" ??? I am not sure what makes you say that...! Not true.

Other than that, for the initial poster, get the 50, because it's more fun to drive than the 35!

I'm just regurgitating what I've read in this forum...can't say exactly where I've read it, but I've seen it said in several different threads. I have limited personal experience other than four days in an '09 FX35 last year...personally I prefer my '45.

I've heard its because you can get to higher rev's with the 35, which makes absolutely no sense to me. In manual mode in the 45 you can drive at whatever rpm you want. There's no substitute for coming around a turn in 2nd and feeling all 320hp pulling you through with all 4 wheels. I have about as much fun doing that as I did powersliding my G35 coupe around town like an idiot. I can't imagine the extra 70hp of the FX50. That seems like a no brainer to me, although I'm foolishly a new car guy so I would struggle with that as well, and probably end up getting the 35 and be kicking myself a year later.

Get the 50. Do it for me. And tell me how much you love it. Then when I'm faced with this dilemma next year or so you can remind me that you chose slightly used and have never been happier with a car decision. :D

Another vote here for the 50. You have the benefit of some depreciation already plus more power.

On the other hand, if you don't care about either of those, then I guess the 35 would work.

For me, 50 all the way.

Am I wrong to think that on a dry pavement only the rear 2 wheels are pushing you, not all 4? I believe that it's 100% rear drive when not slipping... But the basis of your point is soooo true. Love that exact feeling that you describe... Downshift to 2nd and that thing keeps pulling/pushing like it will never stop! :)

I remember a recent discussion about the ATESSA system. Let me look for it......

Okay, found it ----> viewtopic.php?f=1&t=23463

Looks like the general consensus was that the AWD system in the FX (ATESSA E-TS) starts from a complete stop in AWD (50:50) mode. After 19 mph, it switches to FULL RWD (100:0) mode as long as no slippage is detected at any of the wheels. If the AWD system detects slippage in the rear wheels, it will direct power to the front to a maximum of 50:50 split.

Source ---> http://www.newcartestdrive.com/review-d ... iewID=3316
"The ATTESA E-TS (Advanced Total Traction Engineering System for All Electronic Torque Split) all-wheel-drive system improves handling in limited traction situations due to its optimum 50/50 front/rear torque distribution, which can shift rearward up to 0/100 when conditions require. The system provides good starting traction and stable acceleration in snow-covered or off-road situations, since it always starts off with the torque split 50/50."

Yes your AWD FX is RWD unless a slip condition is detected, or the AWD LOCK or Snow MODE switch is on (not sure which the 09+ have).

Well I've definitely had the slip light come on doing that so I'm assuming the fronts are doing some work.

I am not convinced... :? Are those reliable sources? I mean in dry surface and with no slip, it may start at 50:50 but my guess is that it immediately changes to 100:0. In dry/slip conditions then it may stay 50:50 and after "19" miles go back to rear wheel drive. Maybe it's because I also really just hope than when I am just cruising slowly from a red light, I don;t have 50-50 going until I hit 19 miles. Who knows...

(thanks for those links, though; it was nice reading the old thread and the other link)

I'm a bit late to this party but something I've noticed with the 2nd gen FX's... people with the 35's have been complaining about the transmission being "stupid" whereas I don't think I've ever heard of a 50 owner complaining about the same transmission... not sure if there's just fewer 50 owners out there so no one's complained on the ORG yet or if there's really a difference between the 2... I have a theory that the 7 speed transmission was designed with the FX50 in mind first and then attempted to retro-fit on the 35 with some problems... I know the same transmission has since been put into the G's but they weigh a lot less and have the same horsepower (or more) than the FX so the transmission probably doesn't have any problems with the G's... again, just a theory... been too busy working to really look any deeper into it (and lazy as well :P )...

Anyways, good luck with your 35! I'm sure you'll love it as much as the rest of us love our FX's!
