I was searching for some info recently and I came across this old thread about Obama when he was first elected in 2008 ----> viewtopic.php?f=1&t=20441. Some very entertaining (and sometimes heated) debates there.

So now that Obama has been President for nearly one and a half years, what do you all think of the job he is doing? I'm interested to see what everyone's thoughts are now.

I had low expectations and haven't been surprized. He seems to be just what he is, a slick talking Chicago politician who doesn't mind to lie or twist arms to get his agenda accomplished. As bad as it is lets all hope nothing happens to the President and Vice President or we'll have Pelosi. Just about the time you think it couldn't get worse you find out it could, imagine the damage Nancy could do!!

Whether it's his fault or what many will blame to be leftover effects from the previous administration, something's affected me directly. Job loss in my area is BAD and affecting my wife not being able to find work which is, in turn, impacting my own personal economy. The FX may need to go soon.

I wasn't a fan of Obama and still am not.

It's interesting how after the Times Square bomb plot, the federal government made a big stink about it and claimed a defeat against the Taliban. For all the bashing Obama did of Bush (and I'm no fan of his either) and criticising his use of "terror" ... Obama pulled a page out of Bush's own book - when you're down in the polls and people aren't liking you so much, create some drama and throw in the word "terror" and people might be fooled into thinking you're doing a great job and you are protecting us

personally, i have mixed feelings about obama. economically, i'm very conservative, and believe that the free market should be free and largely devoid of government interference. the federal government should not hold the all the power that it has amassed. with that said, i'm socially very liberal, and think that a certain group's morality should not be imposed upon the whole population.
with those 2 ideals, it's extremely tough to pick one candidate over another, as obama is expanding the role of the federal government while attempting to be more liberal in the social sphere.

to be honest though, when it came down to obama vs mccain, i would've supported mccain if it weren't for the complete imbecile of a vice president he picked. he picked the redneck governor of alaska who named her son "trig." if that weren't enough, she knows nothing of foreign policy or international relations. she tweets currently all the time, and on her twitter last week, she said that the oil prices were all the fault of foreign oil companies. of course she said this despite that her husband has been working for such a foreign oil company for the better part of 2 decades. i'm sure she's at skims the line between idiocy and clinical mental retardation.

that said, mccain probably would've done a better job as president, but if he died, just imagine the kind of person who would be at the helm of the most powerful country the world has ever seen in a critical period in which the country is in some of the deepest s**t the world has ever seen.

faced with those options, i'd say it was quite fortuitous i wasn't old enough to vote in 2008.

Seriously!? And you think Biden is a person you want running the country instead??

"Chuck Graham, State Senator, is here. Chuck, stand up Chuck, let them see you. [Biden realizes that Chuck is a paraplegic and can't possibly f*^king stand up] Oh, God love ya, what am I talking about? I'll tell ya what, you're making everyone else stand up though pal." - Joe Biden talking to Missouri State Sen. Chuck Graham, Sept. 12, 2008

"When the stock market crashed, Franklin Roosevelt got on the television and didn't just talk about the, you know, the princes of greed. He said, 'Look, here's what happened." –Joe Biden, apparently unaware that FDR wasn't president when the stock market crashed in 1929 and that only experimental TV sets were in use at that time. Interview with leftist Katie Couric, Sept. 22, 2008 [Surprising how Katie didn't follow up on this remark  ].

"Look, John's last-minute economic plan does nothing to tackle the number-one job facing the middle class, and it happens to be, as Barack says, a three-letter word: jobs. J-O-B-S, jobs." - Joe Biden, Athens, Ohio, Oct. 15, 2008

"His mom lived in Long Island for ten years or so. God rest her soul.......and, uh, um.....oh, she's....wait, your mom's....your mom's still alive. It's your dad who passed." - Joe Biden, about the mother of Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen, March 17, 2010

And my absolute favorite: "You cannot go to a 7-11 or a Dunkin Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I'm not joking." - Joe Biden, in a private remark to an Indian-American man caught on C-SPAN, June, 2006

Well, while we're talking political jokes... (and I do lean more right to be fair on this one but I found it funny)

Bill Maher (whom I absolutely hate and think he's a prick) on Jay Leno said something to the effect of Biden constantly needing to be seen as a regular guy eating a burger. He said something like Biden just picks up the phone and says "I"m the m'fing VP, get me a burger" He went on to say that it was refreshing since Bush would pick up the phone and the guy on the other end would say "Mr. President you have got to stop calling NORAD for your burger orders"

Just trying to keep it (a little) light....

i didn't say biden was much better than palin, but your rebuttal begs the question: to how sad a state has our political system degraded when we have to debate the comparative incompetence of both vice presidential candidates? further, isn't it deplorable that a presidential election has some people approach the ballot as a "lesser of two evils" situation in which there isn't much discrepancy?
additionally, with the low voter turnout, rampant apathy (even among intellectuals), and disappointment toward the government in the united states, shouldn't we entertain the possibility that the problem in politics is systematic?

i'm no blasphemer/communist/socialist, or what have you; nevertheless, i don't see the validity of the two party system. it creates an environment conducive to excessive infighting and honestly, both parties do not encapsulate enough diverse views of the 300,000,000+ people in this country. we need a third party that is as influential and powerful as the dems and reps. however, that's not going to happen. and this is the thought process that led me to disavow any political field of study and get into just translating dead languages all day.

I wanted to respond to these thoughts, as I thought they were spot-on. The two party system we have has created a state of government where many politicians, as well as voters, simply support an issue or a canditate based upon the position that their party is supporting. They vote for a person because that person is a Dem or a Rep, yet they really have no clue what that person's personal beliefs are or what their voting history has been. Similarly, the public either supports or opposes an agenda simply because their political party's leader tell them that its good or its bad.

Perhaps the national level of politics should adopt the practices of city governments that have gone to a non-partisan election system. In these governments, candidates for office do not run as Dems, Reps, or anything else. They run on the issues, and on their political records. The general public is FORCED to actually learn what the issues are and what the candidates plan to do -- there is no hiding underneath the veil of a political party.

you two are spot on! People are way too ignorant to the issues and stances at hand. Myself included.

We need to find a way to stop the party line voting.

the biggest mitigating factor in the formation or rise of a third party is simply the fact that people are extremely reluctant to initiate and accept a systematic change. as decartes said, "tradition is inherited prejudice."
especially for me, studying at georgetown, most students here have the superhero complex ("i'm going to go to law school and become president one day, and save the world!"), which of course the university with all of its grandiose pretense fosters and even encourages.
it's unfortunate, but unless the country gets it together, i think we're witnessing the decline of the american empire.

And I still find this not be a needed thread for this group... Politics can divide people (more so lately) and this is a group to bring people together. I am not saying we cannot have a civilized discussion on this, but knowing what can result, I think it is not wise. Anyway, carry on...

I guess since there is a potential for disagreements and the like, we should just not talk about things.

i actually think this is a great group of people to have serious discussions with. this forum is full of an extremely diverse group of professionals from all sectors of the workforce as well as some college students. as long as we conduct these conversations with the standard level of respect already present in other threads, there's no reason why this forum can't be an outlet for a few opinions on topics outside the realm of cars.
