FX35 Door Handle replacement - Easy instructions

So, dealer quoted several hundreds for a new door handle and replacement. I saw people taking their cars to the dealers for this, and also did not see anybody explaining how easy this job is.

// 10 minutes
1. Order new part from the web, I paid 78 dollars.
2. There is no reason to remove the door liner or anything major.
3. There is a little rubber grommet inside the door, remove that plug and you will see a T30 torx screw, that torx screw connects the door handle escutcheon, ie the chromed piece next to the door handle. Now, I could not find a magnetic torx bit, and the hole is tight and there is a risk that the screw falls inside the door. What I did, I used a pincher that grabs to the base of the screw once I had loosen the screw of the escutcheon.
4. Pull out the eschucheon and then pull out the broken handle.
5. Install the new handle, push in towards the rear and then slide forward.
6. Put the esuctcheon back and tighten the screw
7. Replace the rubber grommet.

// Add another 20 if you drop the screw
If you do need to take the liner of, there is one screw under the inside door handle and two more inside the fake metallic looking part of the inside door handle. Pry it off to get access to the two screws and then just pull the liner off. There are 3 eletric plugs that you need to disconnect and the cables for the inside door handle. Then remove the plastic and try to get access to the bottom part of the door to find your screw. Stuff the top part with something so it won't fall too far when you do it again.

This is my sweet revenge for Infiniti not recalling the actuators and door handles, they are worthless and will fail on all of them

Yea they are simple to change.

But Infiniti really has no need to recall for these. Thay are NOT a safety issue. And they arent as widespread as you would think. They are somewhat prone to fail, but so are the actuators and wheel bearings. Not an epidemic, probably wont fail on "all of them".

Hopefully when someone else breaks one they will find your post here. Did you take any pics? They would help for a better "write up".

Re: FX35 Door Handle replacement - Easy instructions

No pics sorry.

I respecfully disagree with it not being a safety issue. Ours failed with our kids in the car and safety locks were on, and the actuators are on/off. So, in case of an accident, it could be very very difficult to get the doors open quick.

I know two more fx owners living close by who had a handle come off, I think it has something to do with the kids pulling it down though. But the actuator situation is ridiculous. Every single FX owner here in TX that I know, has one or several of them faulting. So far, we have replaced passenger front, and replaced and then finally pulled off the one from gas cap and now the driver side is failing. Freaking joke if you ask me.

Is there a good write up with pics on replacing the actuators? That's what I meant with eventually failing on all FXs..

There's a great write-up for replacement of actuators with the $5 generic unit. Search and ye shall find.

Re: FX35 Door Handle replacement - Easy instructions

I had one fail last summer and had Riverside Infiniti (120 miles away ) replace it for over $200. Left rear door handle failed two weeks ago and I'll be saving the 4 hours round trip and labor this time. Currently searching for the part online...thank you for the instructions. They'll work.

Re: FX35 Door Handle replacement - Easy instructions

Gents,

Just an update to sammyG1s writeup above. Just did the repair and a couple additional details to assist any others (the actual repair--without a bolt falling into the door--did take 10 minutes).

Additional detail 1: I bought the door handle from InfinitiPartsUSA. On their site, they have the door handle with or without dark color parts. Yeah, which did I have? After going back and forth, I went with the "outside w/o dark color parts". I chose wisely. Not for sure who has the dark color part ones, but I have what I consider the "normal" handle. See the pics

Additional detail 2: I also could not find a suitable magnetic T30 Torx bit. You still need a T30 to loosen the bolt, but my goal was NOT to drop the Torx bolt into the door when I tried to pull it out. I ended up buying a "Pick Up Tool" (what Sears Craftsman calls it) for $7. Worked perfectly.

Additional detail 3: When I went to pull out the bolt (in the hole-bolts into the eschucheon), there were two plastic tabs holding the bolt / washer head in. No way for me to get the bolt out past these tabs with the pick up tool unless I bent or broke them. I broke them off with a flat tip screwdriver so that I could pull the unscrewed bolt out. I'm not seeing a detriment to this longterm. Perhaps other model years don't have these two plastic tabs, but just a heads up.

Okay, here are the additional pics. See the description in the border of each. I used sammy's writeup, so these pics only add to it. Thanks, G.

Door handle replacement with keyed escutcheon

Is the handle replacement procedure the same for the front driver's door with the keyed escutcheon?

Answering my own question: Thanks to the previously posted instructions, I was successful in replacing the drivers' front door handle, however, the procedure is a little different when the lock is involved instead of just the plain escutcheon. If you are dealing with the front door handle with the lock/key hole: after you take GREAT care to remove the anchor screw/bolt (the Torx 30) without dropping it (I used a magnetic pick-up tool to remove the screw after it was loose), you don't have to completely remove the internal locking mechanism. In fact, I don't think you would want to because you would have to disconnect the internal linkage which leads from the back of the lock to somewhere deeper in the door internal. Rather than completely removing the lock mechanism, once the mounting screw/bolt is removed, the lock mechanism has some play in it so you can pull it out far enough to allow room to seat the handle in front of it. I found it was best to seat the front end of the handle first, then seat the rear end (in front of the now-exposed locking mechanism). Also, as a previous poster suggested, in order to remove the T30 bolt, do break off that pesky plastic tab which is positioned in front of the bolt and makes it very difficult to remove the bolt after it is loose. I used needle nosed pliers to twist off the one (and only) tab I came across.

Brief follow-up on replacing the door handle on the FX35: the plastic tab(s) referred to in the earlier post and my post which I snapped off (intentionally): I read on a different blog the plastic tabs are meant to prevent the screw/bolt from falling down into the internal door. In retrospect, I recall loosening the screw, but I could not remove it entirely because the plastic tab was blocking me. I think screw may have been entirely dislodged from the the threads, but still inside the escutcheon/key housing with the plastic tab holding it to prevent falling. Maybe? But it would be pretty scary to be relying on the tab to hold the screw as one messed with the escutcheon.

I have a 2006 FX35, the handle snapped off on the interior of the door, the Dealer is saying this can only be fixed by removing the interior Door Panel, window motor, etc...$275 just for the labor, will this procedure work for mine, I have found the part for $150, but I have the keyless entry system on my door handle which probably complicates this situation...Thanks!
